One structural note: PTFE diaphragms are often composite — a thin PTFE face bonded to an elastomer backing for flexibility. Solid one-piece PTFE exists for severe halogen duty. PTFE: Maximum Chemical Resistance, Watch Permeation

PTFE is the default answer for "what survives everything?" — it resists almost the entire acid/base/solvent spectrum: concentrated sulfuric acid (up to 98%), nitric acid, chlorinated solvents, most organic solvents. Pump bodies in PTFE-lined or solid construction pair with PTFE diaphragms to give the widest possible chemical envelope.

  • Temperature: continuous use to ~120°C in pump applications (the resin itself tolerates far more, but the pump structure and elastomer backing set the practical limit).
  • The permeation caveat: PTFE is not a barrier to every molecule. Chlorine, bromine, iodine and small polar solvents permeate PTFE slowly — the molecules diffuse through the wall, condense behind it, and blister or delaminate composite diaphragms. In halogen service, specify solid one-piece PTFE and expect shorter life regardless.
  • Flex life: PTFE is stiff, so diaphragms fatigue sooner at high stroke rates than Santoprene. Slow the cycle in harsh service.

Buy it when: media is aggressive (mixed acids, solvents, oxidizers) and the body is PTFE/PVDF; or when you cannot afford to experiment with chemistry.

Santoprene (TPV): The Flexible Workhorse

Santoprene is the best-value general-purpose diaphragm material. As a thermoplastic vulcanizate, it combines rubber-like elasticity with plastic processability, giving excellent flex life and abrasion resistance at the lowest price point of the three.

  • Chemistry: good for dilute acids and bases, water, wastewater, many salts, and mild chemicals. Not for strong oxidizing acids, aromatics or ketones at concentration.
  • Temperature: roughly -40°C to +120°C continuous, similar to Viton on the low end and better than Neoprene on both ends.
  • Life: the flex-life champion — 6-24 months typical in water/mild service, sometimes years in light duty.

Buy it when: media is water, wastewater, mild chemicals, paints or slurries; or when you want the lowest cost-per-pumped-liter. It is also the standard backing for composite PTFE diaphragms.

Viton (FKM): Heat and Hydrocarbon Specialist

Viton (FKM) is the choice where heat or hydrocarbons kill other elastomers. It handles oils, fuels, lubricants, aromatics and most hydrocarbons far better than Santoprene, and keeps its properties at higher temperatures.

  • Chemistry: excellent in mineral oils, diesel, gasoline, aromatic solvents; poor in ketones (acetone, MEK), esters and some brake fluids, which swell it.
  • Temperature: continuous ~-20°C to +200°C in elastomer terms; in pump duty, the practical limit is usually the body material, but Viton extends the upper envelope vs Santoprene.
  • Cost: the most expensive of the three per part — typically 1.5-3× Santoprene.

Buy it when: the media is oily, fuel-based or hot; or when O-rings and valve balls in the same pump are already Viton for media compatibility.

Buying Guide: How to Order Diaphragms Without Mistakes

Diaphragm orders fail in three predictable ways — all preventable in under two minutes:

  1. Wrong size for the pump. A Wilden "1\" pump" exists in two generations (P1/P2) with different diaphragms; ARO Pro vs Pro-Flo use different part families. Always confirm the pump model stamp on the nameplate, not the port size alone.

Why did my PTFE diaphragm fail in a chlorine application?
